Aarhus Musik is a Danish publishing house, connected to the wonderful sheet music shop of the same name in Esbjerg. The publisher, Søren Storm, asked me to engrave a new edition of Carl Nielsen’s Five Piano Pieces, Op. 3.
Søren wanted a practical edition for musicians, made with real care for the music engraving.
I started looking through older editions of the music and really liked the old 1891 volume published by Wilhelm Hansen. This beautiful edition was originally engraved and printed at their old premises at 8 Gothersgade in Copenhagen, and it was wonderful to examine it.
Once the typesetting was finished, I went through every single page to adjust the spacing and layout, giving the music a more crafted feel. This is the slower part of the work, but I really like taking the time to shape the details of each page.
The final design makes Carl Nielsen’s piano music clear and easy to read. It brings together digital precision and handcrafted music engraving.
